Martha’s Vineyard has attracted and inspired writers from Herman Melville, to William Styron and Geraldine Brooks to Jorie Graham. Many contemporary authors call this place of barrier beaches and stone walls home for at least part of the year.
As a resident you will have ample time to explore and get to know the island and its creative community. The island has many natural wonders from beaches to deep forests, as well as historical and cultural places of interest. Spring and Fall are fabulous months to spend on the island. It is quieter, and the locals are celebrating either the beginning or end of another tourist season. During these months the many community gatherings those of us who live here cherish take place. The weather is dependably mild and pleasant. Many restaurants and attractions are open and can be enjoyed without the crowds.
The Martha’s Vineyard Writers Residency is located in the town of Edgartown on the eastern edge of the island. The town of Edgartown is linked to the rest of the island by frequent bus service. There are also well maintained bike paths that connect Edgartown to other towns, beaches and attractions.
Within walking distance of the Point Way Inn, where residents are housed, are shops, restaurants, grocery stores and fish markets, museums and a movie theatre.
