The Martha’s Vineyard Writer’s Residency was established in 2007 with a simple mission: to give writers of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, memoir, and plays a place in which to create or complete new works.
Residencies are held April 1st-30th and September 15th-October 31st of each year. Writers may chose to stay two to six weeks. Each resident is given a private room with a bath in an historic inn in Edgartown, Massachusetts, on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Eight writers at a time are invited to form an intimate community of peers. The colorful gardens, covered porch and ample common rooms provide several venues in which to work, gather, contemplate or simply to relax.
To apply please fill out the online application form and send a short statement of purpose specifying the project you plan to work on, a brief bio including publication history, the dates you’d like to stay and other residencies you have attended, if any, along with up to 20 pages of prose or non-fiction, one act from a play, or six poems to Writers Residency PO Box 1041 West Tisbury, MA 02575. Applications and manuscripts are reviewed continuously. There is a $10.00 application fee. Make checks payable to Justen Ahren.
The cost of the residency is $175.00 per week due upon acceptance. This includes room but not board. All meals are the responsibility of the individual resident, but each has access to a professionally equipped kitchen. For more information regarding the facilities please see Accommodations.
